Te Anau & Milford Sound

Te Anau is the taking off centre for Fijordland and the Kepler and Milford Sound (misnamed - it is really a fijord and not a sound). We boated 8 minutes to start the Kepler at the base of the lake and cutting off one and one half hours of walk. That way in one day we could do 22 km of hike, straight up to the highest point of the three day trail to the top of Mt. Luxmore and back down again. Jojo, you are right! It is one of the most senic vistas of our whole stay in NZ. We had lunch in the hut before the last hike to the top. Rain was predicted (which is quite normal in the West Coast) but it held off and we could see the trail wander off the ridges and mountain tops in the distance.

We decided on local advice to take a small van tour from Te Anau combined with a boat tour in the famous Milford Sound. We normally don't do tours, but the guide was excellent with a full knowledge of the flora and fauna, and he shared his love the outdoor life in the area. He had also worked with Outward Bound in Australia. We learned a lot and relaxed while he drove the usual hairpin road through the mountains. He made us tea in the coolest and most efficient outdoor fire kettle I have ever seen, that I of course want to buy and ship home. It was very windy in the sound and we had the older version of an extreme sport, and got drenched by spray from the waves and sought refuge in the captain's steering room. It turns out he worked as a rangler for four months in Burwash Landing in the Yukon when he was a young buck.

Te Anau est le point central de la region Fjordland, encore bien situe sur le lac du meme nom. Nous y sommes restes 3 jours. Sur la recommendation de Josianne, nous voulions faire le sentier Kepler (4 jours) mais la meteo nous a decourages. Nous avons profite d'une journee bien ensoleillee pour faire la partie la plus belle, en coupant quelques heures de marche par bateau taxi. (7 minutes pour $20. chacun - encore, rien n'est donne ici). Ca valait vraiment la peine, nous avons pu, en 7 heures, monter au point le plus haut, Mont Luxmore, et redescendre sur la belle plage.

Le lendemain, nous avons suivi le conseil de notre hote au terrain de camping et avons fait une excursion guidee au Milford Sound ($$$). Encore une fois, nous n'avons pas ete decus. Notre chauffeur d'autobus/guide etait excellent, s'arretant a des endroits que nous aurions possiblement manques, et ajoutant un tas d'information interessante sur la faune et flore regionale. Il etait guide de montagnes il y a 5 ans, et nous sentions vraiment son amour pour la nature. Une fois dans le bateau, il pleuvait, mais ca ajoute au paysage parait-il!! Nous avons pu admirer pinguins et phoques du pont. Apres avoir ete eclabousses une fois de trop a l'avant du bateau, nous sommes rentres rejoindre le capitaine, qui, apres lui avoir parle un bout de temps, nous a dit qu'il connaissait le Yukon. D'ailleurs, il y a travaille dans les annees 80 comme main d'oeuvre pour un guide de chasse de Watson Lake. Le monde est petit!
