Agia Irini

Santorini was named after the church of Ste-Irene during the Venician rule. Opinions differ on whether it is the Ste-Irine church in Perissa or the one on nearby Thirassia island. Terry and I found this other one on the island as well. No shortage of churches in Greece. Looking closer to the plaque, one can see the inscription AΓIA EIPHNH, which I was proud to be able to decipher. The Γ sounds as a hard "g", the EI vowel combination and the H sound like the "i" in "marine", and the P sounds like "r". This one was pink too...

Santorin a ete nomme d'apres une cathedrale durant le regne venicien. Les opinions sont partagees si c'est d'apres celle de Perissa, sur l'ile, ou d'apres une autre sur l'ile Thirassia a cote. De toutes facons, Terry et moi avons trouve cette autre en nous promenant sur l'ile. Il ne manque pas d'eglises en Grece. En regardant la plaque de pres, vous pourrez remarquer l'inscription AΓIA EIPHNH que j'etais fiere de defricher avec mon grec de base.
