Sundogs

Minus 41 here in Whitehorse. Normal for this time of year is between minus 10 and minus 15. So much for global warming!!
Yes it is cold north of 60 in Canada, but here is a little advantage. Beautiful sundogs, bright patches of light appearing in the sky 22° to the left, right, above and below the sun. Sundogs are some kind of halo activity, light reflected from ice crystals in suspension in the atmosphere. The photos were taken from our living room window at 2PM on Friday.

Oui, il fait froid au nord de 60 au Canada, mais en voici un avantage. Des "sundogs", dont les photos ont été prises vendredi a 2PM de notre fenetre du salon. Les sundogs sont des especes d'arc en ciel circulaires autour du soleil, causés par la lumière reflétée sur les cristaux de glace suspendus dans l'atmosphère.

Terry and I got away mid october. He had a conference in Parksville on Vancouver island, and invited me to spend the week-end with him there. We had great luck with the weather and we could enjoy some great walks on the beach.

Terry et moi sommes allés à Parksville sur l'ile de Vancouver mi-octobre. Il y avait une conférence et m'a invitée à me joindre à lui. Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance car il a fait très beau et nous avons pu faire de belles marches sur la plage.

Thanksgiving Hike in Atlin

Thanksgiving hike in Atlin with our good friends Fred and Kathy. Josianne came home on my birthday and is working as an educational assistant, in a kindergarden class, until June. She is saving money to pay back her school loans and to go back to Mexico.

Marche en montagne à Atlin pour l'action de grace avec nos bons amis Fred et Kathy Musial. Josianne est revenue vivre avec nous le jour de mon anniversaire. Elle travaille comme assistante éducatrice dans une maternelle. Elle aime bien ca. Elle doit rester jusqu'a la fin de l'année scolaire. Elle compte ramasser assez d'argent pour retourner au Mexique après avoir remboursé ses prets d'études.

Klondike Road Relay team

Not much was new in September, week-ends in Atlin working on the house, work in Whitehorse. I did participate in the Klondike Road Relay again this year, with an all women team. We did well, and here we are.

Pas grand chose de neuf en septembre. Nous passions les week-ends à Atlin, à travailler sur la maison, et le travail durant la semaine à Whitehorse. J'ai participé au Klondike Road Relay, course de 180 km entre Skagway (Alaska) et Whitehorse, avec une équipe de femmes. Nous avons bien réussi, et nous voici à l'arrivée.

Everyone got together at my father's, sun in the eyes, except Claudie, Sébastien and Josianne. It was great to have Claude and Guy Luydlin with us too.

Tout le monde s'est retrouvé chez papa, le soleil dans les yeux, sauf Claudie, Sébastien et Josianne. C'était bien d'avoir aussi Claude et Guy Luydlin.

September/Septembre 2006

Now we have been home almost 3 months. The summer has gone by very fast, and we are now back at work, since September 5th. We will remember...

Living in our unfinished house in Atlin for most of the summer, working on the drywalling, mudding and painting of the walls upstairs, the gravel landscape around the outside, and the plumbing.

Getting broken into our Whitehorse home while in Atlin, and feeling the violation to our personal property first hand.

Taking two weeks off in August to go to Ottawa/Montreal to visit my father, family and friends.

Returning to work.

De retour au Yukon depuis trois mois deja, nous venons de reprendre le travail. Quel choc. L'ete a passe tres vite. Nos souvenirs:

Habiter dans notre maison en construction a Atlin, travaillant sur les joints de platre, et la peinture du haut, l'amenagement exterieur de gravier autour de la maison (a la main), et la plomberie.

Retrouver la maison de Whitehorse cambriolee a un de nos retours d'Atlin et nous sentir personellement violes.

Prendre 2 semaines de conge en Aout pour rendre visite a papa a Ottawa et y voir famille et amis.

Retour au travail.

Back home - De retour à la maison

We have been back home since June 12. We were greeted with wonderful hot weather and blue sky, which softened the chock of the return home. We found the house in good shape, but had to face the dreadful pile of mail. It took us 3 days to open and sort, and dealing with the business attached to it. Now, we only have to do our income tax return, but we have postponed that task to spend most of our time working on the Atlin house.

Nous revoici à la maison depuis le 12 juin. Nous avons été acueillis par un temps magnifique pour les quelques premiers jours (30 C). Littéralement, le ciel était avec nous, et a adouci le choc du retour. Nous avons retrouvé la maison en bon état et avec plaisir. Ce qui l'était moins, c'était la montagne de courrier et le travail qu'elle imposait. Il nous a fallu 3 jours pour l'ouvrir et le trier. Sans compter la mise à jour des comptes. Maintenant, il nous faut faire les impots, mais nous avons remis cette tache à plus tard et nous concentrons sur la finition de la maison d'Atlin.

In Vancouver, we also had the pleasure of visiting Terry's oldest friend Gary Pelzer and his family. Here with Maryanne, and their children Paul, Katy and Ben.

Back in Canada - Retour au Canada

Back in Canada on June 7, we spent several days in Vancouver to visit Terry's family. A notre retour au Canada le 7 juin, nous avons passé quelques jours à Vancouver pour voir la famille de Terry. De gauche à droite, rangée de derrière: Terry, Sandy (la femme de Ken), Melissa et Claire (la fille et petite fille de Ken et Sandy), Ken et Dylan (le fils de Don et Alisa). After the reunion, we said goodbye to Sébastien and papa and we headed back to Paris, where Lo Jo Terry and I left for Canada.

Après la réunion, c'était de départ de Paris pour Terry, Jo, Lo et moi après avoir dit au revoir à Sébastien et papa. Petite visite de la ville en passant.

Family reunion - Reunion des cousins

We, the Markleys, were for the first time able to attend the annual Chadourne cousins family reunion. This was the 20th annual, so it was a nice way to celebrate, as well as my father's 80th birthday year. We were lodged in a vacation village, and the organized activities included going to a nearby theme park, the Puy du Fou, where different eras are re-enacted in a variety of wonderful shows, from the roman times, to the middle-ages.


Nous, les Markley, avons cette année pour la première fois participé à la réunion annuelle des cousins Chadourne. Celle-ci était la 20ème, et papa fêtera ses 80 ans cette année, donc plus d'une raison de fêter. Nous étions logés dans un village vacances, et les activités organisées incluaient une visite du Puy du Fou, où le Parc re-crée les différentes époques en beaux spectacles divers, des temps romains au moyen-âge.

Bordeaux: winery - viniculture

Can't go through Bordeaux without visiting a winery. This one was beautifully situated in the country, and a very friendly small family operation in its 4th generation.

Ce serait dommage de passer a Bordeaux sans visiter une viniculture. Celle-ci était très bien située en campagne, une petite entreprise familiale très sympa, dans leur 4ème génération d'opération.

On the last leg of our trip, we stopped in Bordeaux to visit my cousin Véronique and her 2 dauthters Ambre and Camille on our way to the family reunion further north. Too bad her husband wasn't there. We caught up with their life in Guyanna, where she was in charge of the launch of the french rocket Ariane. As we were leaving, her parents Michel and Gisèle were arriving for an overnight visit, also on their way to the reunion.

Dernière étape de notre long voyage, le week-end des cousins au Puy du fou. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à Bordeaux pour rendre visite à ma cousine Véronique et ses deux filles Ambre et Camille. Elle nous a raconté leur vie récente en Guyanne où elle était chargée du lancement de la fusée française Ariane. Dommage que son mari Laurent n'y était pas. Nous y avons croisé ses parents Michel et Gisèle.

Cathie Alet, Marc & Antoine

Another reconnection with family, this time at my cousin Cathie Alet, who invited us for a very pleasant evening in their beautiful Toulouse home. Marc is an avid hunter, so who knows, he might want to experience the great canadian North some day!

Ma cousine Cathie Alet et sa famille nous ont très agréablement reçus dans leur belle maison à Toulouse. Encore une fois, plaisante soirée à reprendre contact. Marc est avide de chasse, alors qui sait, son passe-temps l'emmenera peut-être dans le grand nord canadien?

Moissac 3

Back to my mother's side of the family, in Moissac, where we had a quick visit with Marcel Colette and their son Jean-Michel for l'apéritif (they were very busy, smack in the middle of the cherry picking season), then for a wonderful dinner at Françoise's, where she also had invited her brother Bernard, her parents Hervé and Yvette and all the children. Very nice to reconnect with them all, and too bad Françoise had a bad cold and wasn't able to be her usual self.

Encore une fois de retour du côté de maman à Moissac. Nous avons vu son cousin Marcel, avec Colette et leur fils Jean-Michel pour l'apéritif (ils étaient très occupés, en pleine cueillette de cerises. Puis chez Françoise et sa famille pour un souper avec son frère Bernard, ses parents Hervé et Yvette, et les enfants. Dommage que Françoise était souffrante ce soir là et n'a pas pu participer à la conversation autant qu'elle aurait voulu.

Canal du Midi

After l'Ascencion, we left Sébastien in Toulouse where he had to go back to work, and Loïc Josianne Terry and I rented bicycles from the city and followed the 16th century canal du midi all the 104 km to Carcassonne. We stopped for a night in Villepinte after a typical cassoulet dinner in Castelnaudary. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful of citadel of Carcassonne again, and took the train back to Toulouse.

Après l'ascension, nous avons laissé Sébastien à Toulouse où il a repris le boulot, et Loïc Josianne Terry et moi avons loué des vélos de la ville pour suivre le canal du midi pendant 104 kms jusqu'à Carcassonne, en nous arrêtant pour la nuit a Villepinte, après avoir mangé un délicieux cassoulet à Castelnaudary. Nous avons revu la citadelle avec plaisir, et sommes rentrés à Toulouse en train.
