The Franz Josef Glacier is one of three tropical glaciers in the world. That means it terminates in tropical rain forests. It is advancing at the dynamic rate of one metre per day. You can only go on the glacier with a guided tour, for a good reason as you can see from the photos. The tour was slow to make it safe, with the guide laboriously upgrading the carved steps in the ice for us. Still, it was fantastic to actually climb up amongst the tremendous sharp blocks of ice. We did a six hour total experience with three hours on the ice, with not toilets or bathroom breaks, or even mention of it. I, of course, didn't make it and hid a pee on the glacial ice. We found out from the guide later that the men usually did that but the poor women suffered from the lack of privacy. The female eyes were bulging, and the body moving when we finally reached the outhouses at the end of the day.
