It is good to hang the family laundry out for all to see, as the saying goes. Ruth couldn't believe people actually hung their laundry in the "front" of their homes.

Riomaggiore (Cinque Terre)

After meeting Rob,Maria,Matthew,Sarah,and Mom at the airport in Genoa we drove/trained to Riomaggiore, one of the five seaside villages of Cinque Terre. Mom began her physical training with the hillside narrow centuries old streets. We all began our introduction to the Italian language and to gelato, good strong coffee, and pizza.

Apres avoir rejoint Rob, Maria, Matthew Sarah et Ruth a l'aeroport de Genoa, nous avons conduit/pris le train pour Riomaggiore, un des cinq villages cotiers de Cinque Terre. Ruth y a commence son entrainement physique dans les anciennes ruelles etroites et raides. Nous y avons aussi tous ete inities a l'italien, les gelati, le bon cafe fort et la pizza.

Italia

On March 22, we were joined in Italy by Rob, Maria, Matthew, Sarah, and Mom for two and one half weeks. We had planned this for quite a while as Mom's chance to visit Europe, at 82 years old, along with Matthew and Sarah's first big international trip. Fun for young and old! We choose a good variety of Italian environments from the scenic coastal villages of Cinque Terre, to a very historic and impressive Rome, to the rural vinyards and narrow streets and cathredals of Middle Age cities in Tuscany, to the slippery when wet "roadways" of a touristic, but unique Venice. Mom enjoyed the Italian fashion and waiters. Matt learned to fold his pizza like a local. Sarah fed the pigeons in St-Marco's square, but unfortunately she is now addicted to gelato and can be seen late at night roaming the Italian quarter of Calgary searching for the perfect flavour. Maria learned more than her goal of one Italian word per day and Rob now has one more accent to add to his repetoire of mimickries. Rob received an award from the Italian coffee sellers association in recognition of caffeine levels never before reached in a foreign tourist. It was wonderful for all of us to be together for a five senses look at another culture.

Le 22 mars, nous avons rejoint la famille de Terry a Genes. Nous avons planifié ce voyage depuis longtemps, voulant offrir à Ruth, à 82 ans, la chance de voir l'Europe pour la première fois, ainsi qu'à Matt et Sarah, leur premier voyage international. Nous avons choisi un itinéraire varié, de la cote pittoresque de Cinque Terre, à l'impressionante et historique Rome, aux paysages serains de la Toscanie, les cathédrales et les rues étroites des citées du moyen age, et les "chemins" uniques de la très touristique mais fascinante Venise.

Ruth a aimé admirer la mode italienne, et les garçons de cafés. Matt a appris a plier la pizza comme un local. Sarah a nourri les pigeons à la place St-Marco, mais malheureusement est maintenant addictée a la gelato italienne. Apparement, on peut la voir, le soir, parcourir les quartiers italiens de Calgary à la recherche de la parfaite saveur. Maria a atteint son but d'apprendre un mot par jour, et Rob a maintenant un autre accent à ajouter à son répertoire de mimiqueries. C'était vraiment bien de jouir d'une nouvelle culture les sept ensemble.

St-Tropez

Katia took us for a drive to St-Tropez, very fashionable still, even in the off season. Apparently, Beckham has been spotted strolling there.

Katia nous a emmenés en voiture à St-Tropez, toujours très à la mode meme en hiver. Apparemment, on y voit Beckham de temps en temps.

Paella

There's a huge paella in a market stand in Lorgues, Provence. The Andalucians are famous for it, but we never saw one that big in Spain.

Voici une énorme paella au marché de Lorgues, Provence. Les Andalousiens sont reconnus pour ce plat typique de chez eux, mais nous n'en avons jamais vu d'aussi gros en Espagne.

Katia & John

Here are Katia and John. We enjoyed their beautiful home, renovated by John's hard work and Katia's good taste and the life in Provence for two days. We also met their cosmopolitain neighbours/friends over a dinner also prepared by John.

Voici Katia and John. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié leur foyer, rénové par le travail de John et le bon gout de Katia. Nous avons pu gouter à la vie provençale pour deux jours, et rencontrer leurs amis/voisins cosmopolitains lors d'un souper aussi préparé par John.

At Jean & Jacqueline - Chez Jean & Jacqueline

Other visit. This one to my father's brother Jean. Two of his daughters were there with their own children. Lots of laughs.

Autre visite, celle-ci chez le frère de mon père, Jean. Deux de ses filles étaient là, ainsi que leurs enfants. Nous avons beaucoup discutté et ri.

Mitou, Dhaou & kids/enfants

On top of seeing most Guittards at Cathie & Phillipe (no photo, too busy talking, gr...) we saw Mitou and her family at their house. We planned an outing for May when our kids are reunited too.

En plus de voir la plupart des Guittard chez Cathie et Phillipe (pas de photo, trop occupée à parler, gr...) nous avons vu les Moussa chez eux. Nous avons planifié une excursion pour le mois de mai quand nous retournerons dans le sud de la France et que nos enfants seront aussi tous réunis.

Shambala

Saba took us to a nice Turkish teteria where they enjoyed the asian atmosphere while playing chess.

Sébastien nous a emmenés à une très agréable teteria, ou nous avons apprécié l'ambiance asiatique pendant qu'ils jouaient aux échecs.

Bicycle touring in Toulouse - Promenade a velo a Toulouse

We decided to leave the car for the week-end and explore Toulouse with Saba "à velo". Much more relaxing than having to find a place to park.

Nous avons décidé de laisser la voiture et de visiter Toulouse à vélo. Beaucoup plus relaxant que d'avoir à chercher à garer.

Toulouse & Provence

It was a short stay in France last week-end. We took the night train from Granada to Toulouse and found Sebastien at home on the Thursday night. With him, we toured Toulouse by bicycle, and visited some of my relatives. Cathie & Phillipe organized an evening with a few cousins and it was great to see so many at once. We left Toulouse on the monday morning for Provence, where another cousin lives. I hadn't seen Katia for 23 years and had fun reconnecting with her by meeting her partner, and seeing the beautiful setting they live in.

Nous avons fait un court sejour en France le week-end dernier. Nous avons pris le train de nuit de Grenade à Toulouse et avons trouvé Sébastien chez lui le jeudi soir. Avec lui, nous avons visité Toulouse à vélo, et rendu visite à plusieurs membres de la famille. Nous avons retrouvé quelques cousins chez Cathie et Phillipe, ainsi que chez un frère à papa. C'était bien d'en voir tant après tant d'années. Nous avons quitté Touloule le lundi matin pour la Provence, ou j'ai une autre cousine, que je n'avais pas vue depuis 23 ans. J'étais trés contente de renouer les liens avec elle, de rencontrer son conjoint, et de voir son beau milieu provencal.

Alhambra

This is Granada´s claim to fame. A beautiful Islam fortress built on ruins of an 7th century older one. Most of it was built in the 11-13 centuries by muslim rulers, added on by the spanish in the 15-18 centuries after they reconquered it. It is a fortified community including a village, palaces, cathedral and army quarters.

Le site le plus renommé de Grenade. Une magnifique forteresse construite aux siècles 11-13 sur les ruines d'une autre encore plus ancienne du 7eme siècle. La plupart a été constuit par les Musulmans, avec rajouts après la reconquete par les espagnols aux siècles 15-18.
